Can you believe it is already almost November? Halloween is just around the corner too! We hope you’ll have a great weekend to come with your family and friends.
This week, we celebrate the Mexican festival of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead on November 2nd. This is a great occasion to join in on the festivities and attend some great cultural events in the city!

What: Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba’s Fuerza y Compás

A colorful, highly energized all-female company of 18 dancers, accompanied by a live band, Dance Cuba expresses the uniqueness of Cuban culture, combining flamenco, ballet and contemporary dance with Spanish and Afro-Cuban rhythms. For their Chicago engagement at the Auditorium Theatre, Dance Cuba will perform a program entitled Fuerza y Compás, showcasing the dancers’ grace, strength and technical precision.
What: Los Amigos Invisibles Concert

This multiple-Grammy nominated and Latin Grammy winning Venezuelan band plays a blend of disco, acid jazz and funk mixed with Latin rhythms. They will be playing at the Green Dolphin tomorrow night!
What: Chicago Sinfonietta Presents Day of the Dead

The Chicago Sinfonietta presents an orchestral celebration of el día de los muertos, the Mexican holiday of honoring the departed. Conductor Hector Guzman leads the orchestra and guest pianist Joaquín Achúcarro in a program comparing somber European traditions of mourning with the more jubilant customs of Latino cultures.

What: Facets Cinematheque Film School Class “Federico Fellini: His Cinematic Realm of Dreams, Magic, and the Self.”

The Fellini class runs from November 9th to December 16th on Tuesdays from 7-10pm. The class is taught by Depaul Professor Connie Markey and screens classics such as “La Dolce Vita” and “Amarcord” in Facet’s cozy screening room. The class will examine Fellini’s cinematic attitude, his wry take on Italian society, and his personal stamp on even his most grandiose cinematic creations. The class is $125, $80 for Facets members- a true bargain for this sort of cinematic experience.

This Halloween, Daley Plaza becomes Franken Plaza for three days, October 29-31, with special performances, a Monster Bash – complete with prize give-aways, hayrides and trick-or-treating!
Lucky number 13 strikes again! Thirteen performers from Chicago’s very own Midnight Circus perform at the 13th annual Chicagoween celebration. Watch as Midnight Circus defies gravity and amazes audiences of all ages with heart-stopping feats of acrobatics & spooktacular theatrics!
On Saturday, October 30th, don’t miss the Monster Bash complete with a costume contest and treats. Visitors to Daley Plaza are witness to its transformation into Franken Plaza where both kids and adults can take part in arts & crafts and see performances that will thrill.
Jeanne Sparrow and Melissa Forman of WCIU will be our costume showcase and contest emcees for the Franken Plaza Monster Bash. The showcase and contest will take place from 11am to 1pm. It’s all FREE.
What: 27th Annual Chicago Children’s International Film Festival

The 27th Chicago International Children’s Film Festival starts tomorrow, October 22, and continues through October 31. It’s the largest film festival for children in North America and features more than 270 films from over 40 countries, including 90 world premieres. Hailed as the “Cannes for Kids,” the Festival is the only children’s film festival in the world designated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as Academy Award qualifying. What: Imagine Cuba: Photographs by Sandro Miller

For over thirty years, internationally acclaimed photographer Sandro Miller has found a unique connection with the people he photographs. Between 1999 and 2007, Miller traveled to Cuba and shot one of his last series on film before transitioning to digital photography.
The photographic essay presents the Cuban people in a unique light, ranging from unposed, candid images of people going about their everyday lives to portraits of Cuba’s professional athletes and ballet dancers. In addition, this exhibition includes a previously unexhibited series of Miller’s black-and-white portraits of elderly Cubans taken in 2009. The subjects’ personal histories are contained in their deeply lined faces as they regard the camera with gazes alternately frank, humorous, defiant, or enigmatic, but always dignified.
What: Building Connections – Brazilian Design for Real Cities

Urban acupuncture, transportation networks, city master plans, and innovative landscape interventions—these are all design strategies investigated in this unique exhibition at the Instituto Cervantes. FREE & open to the public, the exhibit will be on display in the Instituto Cervantes Gallery through November 10, 2010. Construindo Conexões: Desenho Brasileiro para Cidades Reais is a transcultural design platform for architects, urban designers, artists and city residents to discuss innovation within Brazilian urbanism.
