Today is the first official day of fall! While the leaves turn from green to yellow, the walls of our lovely center is also changing colors – from blue to green! As our renovations continue, we are preparing to celebrate our 1 year birthday on October 29th! Please keep your calendars open for a big party!

What: Monsieur Noir – Henri Georges Clouzot

From September 11 through September 30, the center presents a tribute to the master of suspense and film noir often referred to as “the French Hitchcock.” The series includes five of Clouzot’s classics in addition to the first Chicago run of HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT’S INFERNO, a new documentary about the director’s aborted 1964 production. Continuing on the World Music theme this week: catch a performance by Oreka TX at the Cervantes Institute. The group experiments with music on the txalaparta, an instrument from Spain’s Basque region. In 2007, the group’s effort at sharing the music was featured in the acclaimed documentary Nömadak TX. World Music Festival

The City of Chicago celebrates the best of today’s international music at the 12th annual World Music Festival this September 21-30, 2010. The city-wide, multi-venue festival has attracted over a half million concertgoers and has presented more than 500 artists and ensembles from over 75 countries since it began in 1999. This 2010 festival includes nearly twice as many artists as previous editions.

Organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the festival showcases both traditional and contemporary music from diverse cultures across the world and is presented at area museums, parks, cultural centers, plazas, theaters, clubs, and other venues. Events include a combination of free and low-cost ticketed concerts, many of which are family friendly.

When slavery in New Spain was finally abolished in 1810, the residents of Yanga, “the first free African town in American,” celebrated their freedom with an annual carnival. The DuSable Museum also celebrates this momentous event with the Yanga Fest! This annual outdoor festival will feature art, food, and entertainment for everyone, as well as a juried art show with works from local and international artists.
